2.5 Tons of Soap Headed to South Sudan

2.5 tons of soap left the Global Soap Project warehouse on Wednesday, September 14, headed for the Republic of South Sudan in East Africa.

The world’s newest nation is acknowledged to have some of the worst health indicators in the world. For children, the situation is dire with infant mortality rate at 135 per 1,000. Maternal mortality rates are the highest in the world at 2,053 per 100,000 live births.

The brave people of South Sudan voted for independence from Sudan in January 2011, and now face the challenge of building a country and infrastructure where there is none – including a sustainable health care system that will give its children health and hope. Through our partnership with Healing Hands International, a Nashville based humanitarian organization, 10,000 bars of soap will give many families a chance to improve their health and ability to participate in the building of their new country.

A special note of gratitude goes to another great GSP partner, ModerNash. This ingenius company picks up IKEA furniture in Atlanta, then hauls and assembles it for it’s Nashville customers that can’t make the drive or don’t have a big enough vehicle. Because they always have space in their truck when they come to Atlanta, they have offered to transport soap from participating hotels in the area. Because they had some extra room in truck during their latest trip, it worked beautifully for them to transport 10,000 bars of soap to the HHI offices in Nashville.

I saw the clip about Global Soap on CNN. Great idea and great that
someone/group has turned this IDEA into ACTION.
I admit to keeping soap bars, if they are special, when I travel.
I will now be aware of Hilton’s and other hotel’s saving soap for this cause.
Thank you so much for what this project is doing!

So happy to see Kayongo receive the award last night. I too work with the South Sudanese and am so grateful for your project’s gift of soap to the Republic of South Sudan. It and much more are sorely needed in this new developing country. Thank you and best wishes for ongoing success.

Kudos to Global Soap!! I’ve volunteered with sudanmedicalrelief.org in a remote village in South Sudan for the past 3 years where soap is desperately needed and is perhaps more precious than anything except food; people beg us for soap and steal it if they must. So sad not to have such an important hygiene item. Thanks for your brilliant idea and the work you are doing. I hope we can link Stop Hunger Now with Global Soap and get some of this soap to Old Fangak!
